Last year we launched the EJPC Palliative Care Policy Development Award. It was a great success, with a huge number of high-quality individuals nominated by their colleagues. We were impressed by the variety of initiatives in palliative care policy development taking place worldwide, which gave us the opportunity to get a vision of the global situation.
Last year’s winner, Dr Olga Usenko, is a real inspiration, an individual who has devoted her life to changing palliative medicine in Russia. No doubt her work has contributed to the decision, in October, by a Siberian District Court, to acquit Dr Alevtina Khorinyak by deciding that her act of prescribing pain medication to a dying family friend did not constitute a crime. 1

Nominations to the EJPC Award open today, 1 December. We hope to receive the same variety of educational, fundraising and political activism nominations we received last year, many of which would have made worthy winners.
How to write a nomination?
Try to convey, in your nomination, the passion that the person you are nominating has demonstrated for their cause. I hope to be awarding the prize to your colleague at the closing ceremony of the 14th EAPC World Congress in Copenhagen next May. But most of all I look forward to being inspired by the work of the nominees.
