  1. Finally: Palliative Medicine Officially Recognized in Lebanon
    2013-07-11

Palliative Care Medicine is recognized as a specialty in many countries around the world. However, it was still not acknowledged in Lebanon until the 28th of June 2013 when the Ministry of Public Health issued decree number 1/1048recognizing Palliative Medicine as a specialty. This is a big step forward for palliative care in Lebanon and opens the door to positive change on many levels. This announcement has many implications for the future; hospitals will be encouraged to open palliative care centers and education programs, medical students will be able to specialize in this domain, pain control practices will improve, National Social Security Fund would cover palliative services, and most importantly more patients who need such services will be able to access palliative care around Lebanon.
Balsam would like to thank the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health, Minister Ali Hasan Khalil, Dr Walid Ammar Director General of Health, and the National Committee of Pain and Palliative Care for their work towards this decree. Balsam with all its staff, supporters and friends is proud to have played a role in advocating for this change, and would like to congratulate all palliative care advocates around Lebanon!
