AMA 'fact sheet' explains impact of hydrocodone rescheduling
The American Medical Association (AMA) has released a ‘fact
sheet’ for physicians on the final rule by the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration that will reschedule hydrocodone combination products
into Controlled Substance Schedule II as of October 6. The fact sheet
explains how the regulatory change will affect both physicians and
pharmacists. Prescriptions issued before October 6 with refills can be
dispensed in accordance with current DEA rules, while central filling
for Schedule III-V controlled substances can occur until April 8, 2015.
However, the AMA cautions that state laws and some pharmacy and
insurance processes may deny refill requests after the rule takes
effect.
